The retail chain owned by secretive British billionaire Tom Morris has announced a £30 million ($35 million) fund to help support staff during the coronavirus outbreak.
Virgin Billionaire Branson Attacked In Parliament Over Staff Pay During Coronavirus Crisis–But Employees Remain SupportiveNow with a current estimated net worth of $1.8 billion, Tom Morris founded TJ Morris, which owns discount retailer Home Bargains, in 1976.
Home Bargains today is similar to U.S. chain Target, there are 550 Home Bargains stores throughout the United Kingdom, with plans to expand to as many as 1,000. However, unlike a number of more infamous U.K. retails billionaires–Sir Philip Green who owns Arcadia Group and the Barclay brothers who own Very–Tom Morris is never seen in the press and the one grainy photograph in circulation, the Guardian report, shows the businessman posing with pupils after being allowed to land his helicopter on their school field.
With anonymity at the heart of his empire, Morris is very much the Thomas Pynchon of U.K. billionaires. In a rare interview with the Guardian in 2012, Tom’s brother, Joe Morris who is now believed to own less than 5% in Home Bargains, said"It's easy to sell stuff cheap… the hard part is making money out of it…If we can't sell it cheaper than the competition, we won't sell it."
