Everton chairman Bill Kenwright showed his deep affection and affinity for the people of Liverpool when he spoke to rival supporters at the Hillsborough memorial service in 2013
Chants from the Anfield crowd were threatening to drown out the Everton chairman as he cleared his throat on the touchline. Bill Kenwright, though, didn't mind a jot.
And while nobody could ever doubt Kenwright's love for Everton, his subsequent speech showed how that was allied to a deep-rooted affinity for the city of Liverpool itself and its people. He knew when it was time to stick together. That much was already clear. After the independent review had reported its findings in September 2012, five days later Everton marked the occasion ahead of their home game against Newcastle United when two Blues mascots, a girl wearing a number nine Everton shirt and a boy wearing a Liverpool number six jersey, walked on to the pitch holding hands as The Hollies song 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' played inside an emotional Goodison.
And, concluding his speech at the Anfield memorial, he offering a telling observation from having watched a documentary on the Hillsborough disaster just days earlier.
