Big Law is pulling out of Moscow, and their Russian lawyers are feeling 'attacked from two sides'
Big Law has made billions advising Russian clients over the years. But now firms are pulling out.Some want to flee to Dubai or the UK. Others see a chance to poach clients and partners.
For now, lawyers in Moscow have plenty of work to do striking deals and advising local clients on compliance with Russiancontrols. But since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, at least 20 international law firms employing more than 600 lawyers in the country have said they plan to pull out. "It's really hectic right now" for Russian lawyers working at US and European firms, according to another Russian lawyer who spoke to Insider on the condition of anonymity."People are leaving not only because the firms are getting closed but because they're scared."When Russian tanks rumbled into Ukraine in late February, few thought it would mean the end to a 30-year marriage between Big Law and Russia's legal market.
Some lawyers whose firms are pulling out of Russia, including some at Eversheds, Dentons, Debevoise & Plimpton, and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, have indicated they, while others plan to shutter offices, relocating some attorneys and laying off others.
