Limited information was immediately available by afternoon, but Austin McDaniel, communications director for the Alaska State Troopers, said there is no danger to students or staff. “There is no known connection between the school and the deceased person, however the Alaska Bureau of Investigation is actively investigating this incident,” he wrote in an email.
The school initiated the stay-put procedures “out of an abundance of caution,” said Katherine Gardner, the associate superintendent of human resources for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District. Stay-put mode means the building is locked but classes can continue with less interruption than if there were a lockdown, she said.
Gardner said it was not immediately clear how long the school would remain in stay-put mode, but officials are not anticipating a disruption to end-of-the-day or pickup procedures.Tess Williams is a reporter for the Anchorage Daily News, focusing on breaking news.
