‘s stubborn resolve to stay its coronavirus course at the cost of even more lives and treasure.

U.S. reliance on the various experimental vaccines has resulted in the distribution of more than 965 million doses, with more than 672 million administered. Over the past two years, though, cravings for the vaccinations have waned. While 81% stood in line for the first dose and 69% came back for the follow-up jab, only 16% have accepted the updated, “bivalent” boosters, according to the CDC.

Despite plummeting demand, manufacturers have continued to crank out the shots. More than 293 million vaccine doses sit unused in storage. Each inoculation costs the federal government — meaning taxpayers — around $21, which adds up to more than $6.1 billion. The Food and Drug Administration is keeping the surplus out of the trash, though, extending shot shelf life.
