Until now, Congress failed more than 200 times to make lynching a federal hate crime.

After more than 200 failed attempts to pass anti-lynching legislation over the course of more than 120 years, Presidentsigned the Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act into law on Tuesday, ending what Senate Majority Leadercalled a “bitter stain” on American legislative history. “To the family of Emmett Till…thank you for never giving up,” Biden said during the bill’s Rose Garden signing ceremony. “We remain in awe of your courage to find purpose through your pain.

During the Tuesday afternoon ceremony, the president warned that hate only requires “a little bit of oxygen” to come “roaring back” andracial hate as a “persistent problem” in America. “From the bullets in the back of Ahmaud Arbery to countless other acts of violence…. The same racial hatred that drove the mob to hang a noose brought that mob carrying torches out of the fields of Charlottesville.” He also called out past U.S.

The law is named in honor of 14-year-old Emmett Till, the victim of one of the most heinous lynching cases in U.S. history. Till was kidnapped, tortured, and killed in August 1955 by two white men in Mississippi who accused him of whistling at a white woman. Till was one of thousands of documented lynching cases that occurred in the U.S.
