Garcia: Biden’s order a reminder of misguided Texas stance on marijuana
FILE - A demonstrator waves a flag with marijuana leaves depicted on it during a protest calling for the legalization of marijuana, outside of the White House on April 2, 2016, in Washington. President Joe Biden is pardoning thousands of Americans convicted of “simple possession” of marijuana under federal law, as his administration takes a dramatic step toward decriminalizing the drug and addressing charging practices that disproportionately impact people of color.
Currently, 38 states allow for the medicinal use of marijuana, with 19 of those states also accepting its recreational use. In addition, five states have legalization measures on the ballot in November. You get the sense that Patrick is still fighting a Woodstock-era political battle that conflates pot with heroin or LSD and identifies it as a major cause of the degradation of American youth.
A 2021 Gallup poll also found that 68 percent of Americans support the legalization of marijuana. It’s one of the few issues that cuts across our partisan divide.
