O’Malley served as Maryland governor for eight years, from 2007 to 2015
Former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley is in line to lead the Social Security Administration, at a time when the agency is facing an impending depletion of trust fund assets with no clarity on legislation to fix it.
“Since Day 1 I have fought to strengthen and defend Social Security, which tens of millions of Americans have paid into and depend on to support their livelihoods. I know that Governor O’Malley will continue to be a strong partner who works tirelessly to protect Social Security for generations to come,” Biden said in a statement.
“The Social Security Commissioner is directly responsible for all programs administered by the agency, including state-administered programs directed by SSA,” they wrote. “Nominating and confirming a permanent Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner would provide accountable leadership to the agency and reassure the public of SSA’s commitment to supporting the vulnerable populations that rely on its programs.
