Proposal would stop schools from 'categorically' barring transgender students from teams...
Demonstrators hold up a rainbow flag as they march outside of the White House during the Equality March for Unity & Pride parade in Washington D.C., June 11, 2017. WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is proposing new federal rules that would prevent schools from enforcing bans on transgender student athletes — who are prohibited in Texas from participating in K-12 sports teams that align with their gender identity — as Republicans in the state Legislature work to expand those restrictions.
The Texas Legislature in 2021 passed a bill banning transgender athletes in K-12 schools from competing on sports teams aligning with their gender identity. The legislation took effect in January 2022. Texas has since required student athletes to participate in interscholastic competitions according to the sex listed on their birth certificate.Senate Bill 15 has already passed the upper chamber, where it’s a priority for Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and now heads to the House for consideration. Abbott has said he supports the legislation.
