Kevin McCarthy may have saved his speakership but has set a dangerous precedent
The nation is already politically divided, and McCarthy’s shortsighted decision does nothing to reclaim the sensible middle. There are strong conservative voices in the party who see no future in a baseless impeachment fishing expedition especially if this distraction leads to a government shutdown. Rep.
Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, who voices some of the most extreme positions we have heard in Congress, has repeatedly put McCarthy on notice that she would not support any budget deal unless the speaker agreed to support impeachment hearings. And just hours before McCarthy’s announcement, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida filed a motion to remove McCarthy as speaker if he did not acquiesce to their demands.
Even without the impeachment drama, lawmakers in both chambers have to quickly reconcile spending levels, including the increasingly contentious debate over U.S. aid to Ukraine. McCarthy has added another wildcard to the mix and one that will spill over into election season.
