The opening episode of the murderous spin-off - which involved a killing on a vintage train - was quintessential cosy crime
as cutting-edge television, but the sleepy Caribbean caper was ahead of its time in predicting the present-day cosy crime craze. Whether it’s Kenneth Branagh butchering a Belgian burr inspin-off that relocates grouchy DI Humphrey Goodman from the tropics to coastal Devon, began its second series tonight.
Humphrey – an agreeably grumpy Marshall – and deadpan DS Esther Williams were participating in a murder mystery rehearsal by local am-dram group, the Shipton Abbott Players, aboard a vintage locomotive.They were last-minute stand-ins for the real fake detectives – in other words, cops pretending to be actors rather than the other way around. Or at least they were until the play’s murder victim was bumped off for real as the train idled in a tunnel.
With no sign of a resolution to the investigation, Humphrey received a stern call from his superior, CS Charlie Woods . He was to hand the case over to regional headquarters. But just as all seemed lost, the knotty web was untangled by Humphrey and Esther. In a brainstorming session, they connected the crime to a married couple in the am-dram organisation. They had secretly blamed the victim for their son’s suicide years earlier after he injured the boy in a drunk driving incident.
