over State Rep. Ina Minjarez late Tuesday in the race for Bexar County judge, with nearly 62 percent of the in-person early and mail-in votes.
The celebration for Sakai’s campaign at Tony G’s Soul Food was subdued in the aftermath of the school shooting in Uvalde. Sakai spoke after a prayer for unity and support for families who lost loved ones in the tragedy and the community in Uvalde County, west of San Antonio.“My heart is breaking right now,” said Sakai, a longtime children’s court judge. “I know we’re here to celebrate, but it takes a back seat to what has happened today.
Speaking with reporters, Sakai said he was waiting to get more information on the shooting and wanted to focus his attention on mourning and grieving for Uvalde. He said Bexar County needs to “be prepared for these senseless acts of violence,” but he didn’t offer any opinions on policy regarding guns or security.
He doesn’t see his campaign talking points changing much when he faces DeBerry in November. He said Minjarez “ran a tough, hard campaign, and so did we.”Both candidates have called for an overhaul of the state’s property appraisal system.
