As pools reopen across San Antonio, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is reminding parents to keep a close eye on the kids.
, there were 6,400 nonfatal drowning injuries among children under 15 in 2022. Of those nonfatal injuries, 76 percent involved children younger than 5 years of age.
Child drownings are the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 years old, according to CPSC officials. More than 370 fatalities were reported on average in children under 15 between 2018 and 2020, the most recent year for which data is available. Pool or spa-related drownings involving children younger than 5 years of age increased 10 percent in 2020 with 279 fatalities reported or 75 percent.
"The fatalities from drowning and non-fatal drowning injuries are still high, so water safety vigilance remains crucially important this summer and all year," CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric said in a statement."You should install proper barriers, covers and alarms on or around your pool, as well as designate an adult to always supervise children in the water."
In incidents with a known location, 80 percent of reported fatal child drownings were in residential settings, including victims' homes or those of their family members, friends or neighbors. Of those, 91 percent were in those younger than 5 years of age. "The report also highlights stark racial disparities in drowning fatalities," wrote CPSC officials."Among children ages 5-14, 45 percent of drowning deaths involved African Americans."
