Vince Gilligan's one regret about BetterCallSaul's penultimate episode proves how detail-oriented he is 👀 'I realized Gene, at the very end of the final act, he should’ve been talking to Jeff on his Bluetooth earpiece. [...] I dropped the ball...' 😯
Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan reveals the one regret he has about the show's penultimate episode. With only one installment left to go, the Breaking Bad spinoff has taken some big swings. It has included some fitting cameos, further linking the two shows together, and has offered a sense of resolution for characters that fans will likely be seeing for the last time.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY "Waterworks" continues this trend. The episode, which is written and directed by Gilligan, keeps Kim Wexler alive. But she's hardly thriving. Her relationship with Saul Goodman , now going by the alias Gene Takovic, isn't as tarnished as some of the most pessimistic theorists wagered it would be. But, at the same time, there's almost nothing left between them.
In this last episode, which I’m very pleased with and was a group effort like they all are, I realized Gene, at the very end of the final act, he should’ve been talking to Jeff on his Bluetooth earpiece. Because we had made a point in the previous episode that he was back to being Saul with the earpiece. I dropped the ball on that one when I wrote the episode.
As viewers debate the increasingly vanishing difference between Jimmy McGill, Saul, and now Gene, Gilligan's comments reinforce how deeply he and co-creator Peter Gould and the rest of the Better Call Saul team think about the stories they tell. The spinoff might get teased for declining to de-age Aaron Paul, or for things like recasting Mike's granddaughter a few times.
It's a testament to what Better Call Saul has done well and, specifically, to "Waterworks." The penultimate episode isn't likely to please everyone, with its reinforcement of the fact that Saul is the villain and its plainly bleak depiction of the results of Kim's actions, but no one can deny the care and the excellent performances put into it. It's among the many things that will be missed when the spinoff ends.
