Although the car-free idea wasn’t originally on the table, city officials bought into it following public outreach last summer and a last-minute push by members of Telegraph for People, a student-driven advocacy group.
Under the guidance of senior transportation planner Eric Anderson, city staff now will begin planning and engineering construction on the four streets. That could be the final nail in the coffin for establishments still trying keep the lights on and doors open after struggling through the pandemic, said Alex Knox, executive director of the Telegraph Avenue Business Improvement District.
Ken Sarachan, a longtime business owner along Telegraph Avenue, took his concerns one step further, saying the project is tantamount to UC Berkeley extending its “sovereignty” beyond its own blocks and changing the historic street into a “food court” in the process.
