The club had formed at a meeting four years before, and the structure still stands today.
Women had to organize themselves to create their own alternative places. In the Berkeley community, there were a number of women’s clubs, such as the Town & Gown Club and the Twentieth Century Club. On the UC Berkeley campus, male faculty and administrators had The Faculty Club for men only.
Jessica Peixotto , who was on the economics faculty, hosted a meeting at her apartment in Cloyne Court, a brown-shingled residence north of campus. In the early years it was a place for social gatherings as well as a residence for single women associated with the university. Today, the upstairs rooms are guest residences for campus visitors, and the club — still independently run by its members — offers dining to members , as well as social and educational events. As the club website says, “it’s the only faculty club in the nation, founded originally for women, that still has its own building.
Her academic specialties included cost-of-living analysis, child welfare and co-education, and she was appointed to California and national advisory posts. Her academic work at Cal also led to the creation of the Social Welfare Department.
