Benny Chows, the new American Chinese restaurant from Berg Hospitality Group opening June 28 at 1818 Washington. Shown: Brian Sutton, vice president of culinary for Berg Hospitality, and Shirong Mei, executive chef of Benny Chows.Some of Ben Berg’s favorite dining memories were made in old-school Chinese restaurants he frequented growing up in New York.
With those initial Houston restaurants under his belt , Berg is finally realizing a concept he’s pondered for some time. One that indulges his own nostalgic culinary connections. The food lineup begins with dumplings: pork potstickers, pork soup dumplings, crab and pork soup dumplings, shrimp dumplings, pork and shrimp shumai , spicy cumin lamb potstickers, and spicy chicken wontons. An array of dim sum includes scallion pancakes, crab Rangoon, shrimp toast, turnip cakes, brisket eggrolls, and mushroom and foie gras rolls. Other starters: hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, duck lettuce wraps, honey-glazed spareribs and cold sesame noodles.
Entrees include Cantonese lobster, prawns with lobster sauce, General Tso’s chicken, sweet and sour chicken, crispy orange beef, moo shu pork, sweet and sour pork ribs, and Peking duck with house-made pancakes.
