Ben Bradley lost to Labour's Claire Ward in the East Midlands Mayor election

Ben Bradley says he wants to continue leading Nottinghamshire County Council after losing out on the role of East Midlands Mayor. Councillor Bradley, who has led the Conservative-controlled council since 2021, would have had to immediately give up the role if he won the East Midlands Mayor election on May 2.

Given that Claire Ward was instead victorious for Labour, Councillor Bradley can now continue as a councillor on Nottinghamshire County Council. There had been reports that he was considering stepping back as its leader, but Councillor Bradley has now confirmed he wants to continue. The Conservative Group running the authority meets every year to confirm who its leader should be, and the group's annual meeting is due to take place next week before the annual public meeting of the full council on May 16. The Conservative Group will still have to confirm Councillor Bradley as leader for another year, but he says he will be putting his name forward.

"I fully intend to continue as leader if the group will have me and that's obviously subject to our normal annual processes in terms of annual general meetings and all the rest of it. I'll certainly be putting my name forward and I hope that the group will continue to endorse me to carry on as leader."

In the event of Councillor Bradley winning the East Midlands Mayor election, names previously mentioned as potential successors included Neil Clarke, Richard Jackson, Keith Girling, Sam Smith and Matt Barney. The Conservatives are set to stay in control of Nottinghamshire County Council until at least the next elections for the authority in 2025.
