Domhnall Nugent has been sober for the past four and a half years
Sitting in a student house in the Holylands at the age of 18, Domhnall Nugent was greeted with a plate of cocaine that would begin a path to self-destruction that would lead to him dropping out of university and ending up homeless.
Now four and a half years sober, the 26-year-old told Belfast Live about his recovery journey and offered advice for others who are just beginning on the road to sobriety."I did a lot of travelling; jumping on planes thinking the grass was going to be greener on the other side, and living off a reputation I was still half good at hurling and football. It was very tough and I ultimately ended up homeless and not thinking I had a way out.
"I've made amends for my mistakes, but looking back I feel sorry for that young Domhnall, and that's why I'm doing what I'm doing now." "At that stage, I didn't care anymore, I didn't want help and felt like I didn't have a purpose in my life, I didn't have any drive and didn't care if I died. That's when I was sofa surfing.
He started to work with young people in West Belfast, began working as an addiction facilitator at Cuan Mhuire, and last year started his podcast, Let's Face It, after receiving messages from people asking for advice. "I would journal each day and there were some horrible days, but at the end of my journal each night I would write "be excited about the person you want to become." For me, that looked like coming back and playing sports again, and playing for Antrim again - which I did.
"In the early days of trying to stay sober for the likes of Sober October, it's so important to be surrounded by like-minded people. There are still days I would walk down the road and get a smell of beer and it's like a game of tug-a-war.
