Funding will be provided to 25 primary schools and seven post-primary schools at the end of October
A charity based in North Belfast is doubling its efforts to support local families during the winter months this year by funding school meals at primary and post-primary schools.
Speaking to Belfast Live about current rising costs and the impact on school children, Bernadette said: "Things are very difficult in the current climate for everyone and for those children already from disadvantaged backgrounds, things are getting worse. We have noticed those children who wouldn't on paper be considered to be disadvantaged are also struggling in terms of the family being able to provide what we would call the basics.
"What really struck us was when the funding ended and we reverted back to the previous system of those with free school meals didn't pay and those who didn't have free meals paid, it wasn't just the odd child who wasn't eating lunch, we had tables and tables of children not eating. When you tried to sensitively unpick that, they just didn't have the money.
Funding for primary and post-primary schools will be available from the end of October, with schools able to choose when they use it. Just as they did last year, Blessed Trinity College will make free school meals available for all pupils in January and February to help families following Christmas. As North Belfast is one of the most deprived areas in Northern Ireland, David said they are doing all they can to help families provide the basics as financial pressures continue.
"This year the Society will be supporting food programmes in 25 primary schools and seven post-primary schools in North Belfast, and will make more funding available. This will allow schools to provide food for children who are experiencing hunger, as part of a breakfast or lunch club.
