Becky G turns femme fatale in her long-awaited debut, ‘Mala Santa’
Meaning “Bad Saint” in English, “Mala Santa” informs potential suitors that Becky G is “neither bad nor holy” — she’s just out to have a good time. Over a hard-edged dembow beat, her devil-may-care verses evoke an age-old feminist slogan addressing a sexist double-standard against women in pursuit of pleasure: “Ni santas, ni putas, sólo mujeres,” goes the saying, or “Not saints, not sluts, just women.
As if to emphasize her point further, she goes completely solo in the video — dumping the squeaky-clean Becky Gomez we remember from her 2014 earworm, “Shower” — and executing slithery dance moves in a corset and thigh-high boots. “Te gusta el juego/Yo soy la que empieza/Pero recuerda que,” she sings: “You like the game/But I’m the one who starts it/Remember that.”
Reggaeton producers DJ Luian and Mambo Kingz leave heavy fingerprints on Gomez’s Spanish-language album, offsetting her bubblegum pop soprano with tropical panache.is stacked with her most standout collaborations from the past two years: including “Mayores” with Bad Bunny, and the Natti Natasha-assisted “Sin Pijama.” Rising urbano stars like Paulo Londro and Sech make cameo appearances as well, adding some dimension to the already established all-star cast.
