In 2022 alone, the list of Texas wildfire names runs the proverbial gamut with pop culture references, popular food items and even a cocktail to boot.
Steve Gonzales, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographer, a number of considerations factor into these titles with some blaze names being somewhat more curious than others.
"Wildfires are typically named after something related to where the fire started or a nearby landmark, and some of those names can be rather interesting," the agency posted in a tweet, with a link to a compilation of some of its"favorites." While the names of wildfires"may seem random," the Forest Service wrote, most of the titles are linked in"some way" to the location of the blaze. This approach also varies from the classification system used with other named weather events.
However, in the Lone Star State, not all systems are necessarily named. For example, in East Texas, home to what the Forest Service described as"frequent" wildfires, these systems are only named if they are larger events defined as blazes involving more than"100 acres in forest fuels and more than 300 acres in grass fuels.
