For Mendez Gandica, it’s that same passion for STEM that has made her an advocate in encouraging other Latinas like her to pursue the field. “I highly encourage people at any stage on their schooling or professional career to have at least three mentors in their lives, one personal, one professional, and one who just wants the best from you. And remember that mentorship works both ways,” explains Mendez Gandica. “We all have something that can help someone else.”
Deciding to over-prepare and find other avenues instead of just the traditional application helped put Mendez Gandica over the top. "The concept of a growth mindset is dear to my heart,” explains Mendez Gandica. “I am a strong believer that there's always room to learn more about a topic, a discipline, or a process.”
