Boots Riley's new Oakland-set series “I’m a Virgo” was revealed to a Bay Area audience at the SFFILM Festival's closing-night event.

where the first four episodes were shown during the closing-night event at the SFFILM Festival on Sunday, he couldn’t help but grin.

The surreal coming-of-age miniseries stars Emmy award-winning actor Jharrel Jerome as Cootie, a gentle giant of a 19-year-old whose only connection to the outside world is TV commercials and comic books as his surrogate parents try to hide him away from the hostility and prejudice of modern society. When Cootie’s curiosity gets the best of him and he escapes his sheltered reality to befriend a trio of local activists, he learns that the fantastical version of Oakland isn’t all that it seems.

Without giving away too much, “I’m a Virgo” turns the ubiquity of the superhero movie on its head, providing a larger-than-life commentary on the commodification of Black culture, the failures of our health care system, the effects of capitalism and more. What’s more, unlike the CGI-laden tent pole Marvel blockbusters, “I’m a Virgo” employs practical effects, forced perspective shots and stop-motion animation.

On the blue carpet at the SFFILM Festival, Riley told SFGATE that some of these experiences growing up, which eventually led him to join the Progressive Labor Party as a teenager and organize a walkout at Oakland High School, didn’t just play a role in “I’m a Virgo.”
