Barbie continues its box office domination, breaking an impressive 15-year-old record that previously belonged to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Barbie has been a major box office hit, and the film just broke a box office record previously held by one of Christopher Nolan's most beloved movies. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the titular Mattel doll, following the character as she leaves Barbie Land and embarks on a journey to the Real World.
Now, following the movie's release in theaters, Variety reports that Barbie's box office has just beaten a record held by Nolan's The Dark Knight for the past 15 years. Gerwig's film had the best-ever Monday performance at the box office for a Warner Bros. movie, raking in an impressive $26 million, beating The Dark Knight's previous record of $24.6 million .
Why Barbie Has Been Such A Big Success While excitement for a movie based on one of the world's most iconic and recognizable toys was always likely to be high, the success of Barbie at the box office can't be discussed without mentioning the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon. When it was announced that Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer would be releasing the same day, the two films became competitors.
This competition and the stark contrast between the two movies, however, soon blossomed into a celebration of both, with tens of thousands of moviegoers purchasing tickets for a Barbie and Oppenheimer double feature. It was initially feared that the viral nature of Barbenheimer could be overinflating box office projections for both films, but upon their release last week, the opposite was shown to be true.
The viral component alone, however, likely wouldn't have been enough to propel Gerwig's film to such impressive box office heights. The combined star power of Robbie and costar Ryan Gosling was undoubtedly a factor, as were the early Barbie reviews, which were all very exceedingly positive. It remains to be seen whether Barbie will have legs over the comings weeks, but the film is evidently already a massive success for Warner Bros.
