Barack and Michelle Obama’s powerful statements acknowledge the radical change that needs to occur for change to truly happen in this country.
for seeming to glorify violence.) On the other end of the spectrum, Barack and Michelle Obama, the former president and first lady, also took to social media this weekend to share their own words about what is happening. And their powerful statements seemed to highlight the one thing that President Trump has been unable to demonstrate during the three-and-a-half years of his presidency: empathy.
Barack Obama, who posted on Instagram on Saturday, began his statement by writing that he wanted “to share parts of the conversations I’ve had with friends over the past couple days” surrounding the footage of Floyd’s death. He first shared an e-mail that he said he received from a middle-aged African-American businessman. It read, “Dude I gotta tell you the George Floyd incident in Minnesota hurt. I cried when I saw that video. It broke me down.
The former president then acknowledged the radical change that needs to occur for change to truly happen in this country. “It’s natural to wish for life ‘to just get back to normal’ as a pandemic and economic crisis upend everything around us,” he wrote.
Michelle Obama, meanwhile, shared an image of Floyd on her Instagram page this weekend . The former first lady wrote, “Like so many of you, I’m pained by these recent tragedies. And I’m exhausted by a heartbreak that never seems to stop. Right now it’s George, Breonna, and Ahmaud. Before that it was Eric, Sandra, and Michael. It just goes on, and on, and on. Race and racism is a reality that so many of us grow up learning to just deal with.
The Obamas have long been vocal about the mistreatment of black Americans in this country. Following thein 2012, for instance, Barack Obama released a profound statement that continues to resonate. “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Obama wrote, later adding, “Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.” That, like his and the first lady’s powerful words this weekend, displayed true compassion, understanding, and leadership.
