Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick support banning cities from lobbying at the Legislature.Texas is poised to become the first state in the union to outlaw taxpayer-funded lobbying. It’s a piece of legislation that sounds really good to a lot of people. In practice, banning local governments from lobbying will put more power into the hands of the state.prohibits cities and political subdivisions from using funds from city taxes to hire lobbyists. The bill has the support of Gov.
Local governments work closest with constituents, and they must have a voice in Austin. Since all funds in cities come from taxes, local governments pay lobbyists to plead a city’s case to the Legislature when corporations lobby against them or when state lawmakers pile on unfunded mandates. Concerns about lobbying in Austin are valid. We should be concerned that there is a lack of disclosure on how much a lobbyist can spend to influence lawmakers. We support reining in lobbyists, but this is not the bill to do that.To represent the interests of residents, cities have a duty to assert a presence at the Legislature and stand for the issues affecting their communities.
