The report, citing “sources close to the Patterson family,” said the standout junior receiver was “running late for school and tried to beat a train” through an intersection at around 9 a.m.
It said that “an investigation and witness accounts” showed that “automatic roadway gates were lowering to block traffic, and that red flashing signals were activated.” The Sentinel’s Chris Hays reported that Patterson’s Honda Accord “did not stop for the lower gates,” just before being hit by the train.
Patterson was a native of Kissimmee, Florida who moved to Baltimore to play at St. Fraces Academy, a national power. He claimed offers from 21 schools with Michigan, Arizona State, Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia also among those who had offered. He was rated as a three-star prospect by 247 Sports.“He had this million-dollar smile,” his former coach in Florida, Brandon Pennington, told The Sentinel.
