Here are some changes you need to know before the new school year starts.
As Alabama families prepare to return to school in the coming weeks, there are important legislative changes to keep in mind that could impact K-12 students and the services they receive this school year.
English Language Learners Testing Exemption - Exempts academic performance of certain ELL students from the state report card. A student who has not shown proficiency on state-approved English proficiency assessments may not be considered in assigning an academic achievement grade to a school or school system for the first five years of enrollment of the ELL student.
Advanced Enrollment for Military Families - Establishes an advanced enrollment program for children of military families, who reside out-of-state but have received orders to relocate to Alabama. The program will allow military parents to enroll their children remotely with a copy of the military relocation orders and proof of residency documents.
A public hearing will be held at 10 a.m. on Sep. 8 at 50 N. Ripley St. in Montgomery to clarify what is deemed appropriate for classroom discussion. So far, no guidance has otherwise been issued on how either measure will be enforced or implemented in schools.Homeless Youth Drivers’ License Fees - Exempts homeless youth from certain fees associated with a driver’s license and requires a designated school staff member to verify whether a student qualifies for the exemption.
