Choosing a name for a new baby isn't always easy, but according to new research several monikers may now be on the brink of extinction following a decline in popularity
When embarking on a parenting journey, one of the toughest challenges to face new mums and dads is deciding what to name their little one, especially as that name will be with them for the rest of their lives.
However, with name trends constantly changing and more and more people opting for a unique moniker, a number of classics are now all on the brink of extinction, with Keanu, Peggy, Kiera, Maddy and Nelson among the names that could soon vanish altogether, according to UK parenting resource, BabyCentre.
Now, a selection of near-extinct names have been discovered, after baby names between 2022 and 2023 were analysed to try and identify which names had suffered the biggest declines and in turn, see which monikers were slowly falling out of favour. Following the conclusion of the research, it was soon discovered that the most endangered boys name for 2024 is Keanu, meanwhile the most endangered girls name is Flo. Given Keanu’s association with acclaimed John Wick and Matrix star Keanu Reeves, and Flo’s connection to Dune actress Florence Pugh - the latest data does support the idea that families are choosing to shy away from popular celebrity inspired names.
