4 ways business owners can avoid holiday-season supply-chain issues this year
Dean, Riportella, and Edwards share their four steps for preparing for a busy season complicated by supply-chain issues. Phil Riportella and Bryan Edwards , Co-founders.The first step in planning begins with inventory, Edwards said. Purchasing should be done with hefty lead times to allow for long production, especially for anything that will be shipped or put onto a boat, he said. Dean also uses a six-month marker for her North Carolina-based candle-making shop.
Additionally, both Snif and Hummingbird founders named responsiveness, flexibility, and brand dedication as crucial characteristics in a quality supplier. Lastly, Riportella advises business owners to maintain relationships with suppliers in order to manage expectations throughout the entire process. In October 2020, when Dean ran out of vessels for her brand's signature candle line — and the supplier ran out, too — she pivoted to create an entirely new collection using materials shefind."One result of supply-chain issues is having to create new products on the fly," Dean said.
