Scientists have also found the first evidence that sea birds are starting to develop immunity to flu. Thirty per cent of Northern gannets and 50 per cent of Shags analysed by researchers having antibodies from previous infections that could help protect them against the virus in the future. “It seems to have gone back back to being more like the precursor, H5N8 virus, which wasn’t such a problem. So it’s a question of waiting and seeing.
“We have set up a joint government industry task force on vaccination – inside, outside, turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, many different species,” she said.
