Experts are recommending people stop using outside birdfeeders to help prevent the spread of highly pathogenic Avian influenza.

But what about hummingbird feeders? Is it safe to feed the brightly colored tiny visitors using their own feeders?hummingbird feeders are not without risk when it comes to spreading disease. They do, however, pose a lower risk than general feeders as there are limited groups of birds visiting them. Despite this, Hall recommending people consider pausing their use in areas with high transmission of HPAI.

Hall said there are “lots of gaps in knowledge” about the role of songbirds in HPAI outbreak making it hard to measure the risk of transmission. It is because of this uncertainty experts are recommending people take measures to limit exposure for wildlife. “Because the science is unclear on the role of songbirds in this current H5N1 outbreak, one consideration is to not encourage birds to gather together at places such as bird feeders or bird baths. These are places where things like viruses could easily be exchanged between individuals,” Hall said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 27 million cases of avian influenza have been reported in backyard and commercial poultry as of April 8th. Another 637 cases have been reported in wild birds in 31 states, including Alabama. The Alabama case was reported Feb. 23 in an American wigeon found in Limestone County.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
