After conflicting reports over what Avatar: The Way of Water’s actual break-even point is, a new study reveals it made over half a billion in profit.
A new study claims that Avatar: The Way of Water earned over half a billion in profit, settling the debate regarding how much the sequel needed to make in order to break even. Serving a follow-up to his 2009 smash hit, Avatar: The Way of Water continues the story of Jake and Neytiri as they deal with the return of humans to Pandora. The film earned mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics alike and was a major box office success, earning over $2.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, per a new study from Deadline, Avatar: The Way of Water's actual profit sits at $531.7 million. After factoring out the additional costs of filming most of Avatar 3 and parts of Avatar 4, which were shot concurrently, the film's production budget is pegged at $400 million. The film's $2.3 million box office haul is further eaten into by hefty marketing costs, residuals, and participations. The $531.
That said, this huge investment in the technology will pay off in a big way for Avatar 3, 4, and 5. Since the technology has now been invented, the budgets for these follow-up movies should actually be considerably lower. If the coming sequels perform anywhere near as well as Avatar: The Way of Water has, the franchise will be looking at some pretty serious profits for the follow-up movies.
In addition to creating the necessary technology, visual effects take a lot of time and effort to get right. Avatar: The Way of Water's VFX are arguably the best to ever be put on a movie screen, but this level of perfection evidently takes a lot time and highly-skilled workers to pull off. It remains to be seen how future sequels will perform, but Avatar: The Way of Water is clearly a gamble that has paid off in a big way for Disney and all involved.
