But oh, the promise! I abandoned rock for jazz in my early teens and picked up the usual blues riffs pecking away on friends’ pianos. We didn’t own one and I somehow never asked my parents for lessons. Still, I listened intently through my headphones to Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly and Ahmad Jamal, channeling their fluid solos and the applause from their live club dates as my own.
So high had I gotten on my own fumes that I dared audition to fill in at a popular island piano bar for the house player, who was preparing to leave for vacation. “Uh, not our style,” he said, showing me the door. I practiced for hours, keeping the mute pedal locked as a courtesy to my family and neighbors. But early bad habits and a mental block around diminished fifths, flat ninths and other inverted harmonies kept me in a narrow register. The disconnect between what I heard and what I could play was too wide to bear and the piano became a leaden piece of furniture in our living room.
