After years of internal debate, one of the world’s biggest coal exporters and greenhouse-gas emitters per capita is targeting net-zero emissions
SYDNEY—Australia formally adopted a plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 just days before the start of a United Nations climate summit, ending its status as an outlier among developed nations, many of which had already set such a target.
Scientists say Australia is particularly vulnerable to climate impacts. The country has become steadily hotter over the past century, with most warming happening since 1950, according to the country’s Bureau of Meteorology. The mean temperature from 2011 to 2020 was the highest on record, at nearly a full degree Celsius above average, data from the bureau show.
Australian officials said the country is on track to reduce emissions by up to 35% by 2030 compared with 2005 levels, above the country’s target of 26% to 28%. But Mr. Morrison said he won’t formally commit Australia to a more ambitious 2030 target, arguing that Australian voters endorsed the 26% to 28% target when his government was elected in 2019.
