Anyone who assumed the animosity surrounding Chris Beard and Texas Tech would disappear after one men’s basketball game will likely admit defeat Saturday.
The buildup for Saturday’s game has been dominated by discussion of how many tickets Tech fans were able to score at the cavernous Erwin Center before Texas officials shut down sales. The attempt to pack the Erwin Center even gained an alleged online code name: Operation Austin Takeover. Apparently, Tech fans were able to secure the secret pass code reserved for Texas and took full advantage.
That’s a whole lot of words to convey that simple fact that Saturday isn’t a normal game. At the same time, the animosity and edge to Beard’s departure may start diminishing after this game — although the coach took a different view Thursday at his news conference. Beard tried to shift the narrative away from his personal storyline to the bigger picture, the meeting of two teams with big goals for the rest of the season.
