Aurora joined Nasdaq as a supply-chain crunch boosts robot truck interest

, are targeting the $800 billion U.S. trucking industry that’s straining to contend with port backlogs and a shortage of as many as 60,000 long-haul drivers, according to the American Trucking Association.

Urmson, previously head of the Google Self-Driving Car project, formed Aurora in 2017 with Sterling Anderson, who led Tesla’s Autopilot program, and Drew Bagnell, a Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist and former member of Uber’s autonomous vehicle team, Uber ATG. Aurora acquired the Uber unit and formed its partnership with the ride-hail giant in December 2020.

Unlike the robotaxi services that Waymo, General Motors-backed Cruise and Amazon’s Zoox are working on, however, Urmson says Aurora will initially focus on higher-speed highway rides, such as airport runs, on the highway. Based on Uber data the company has access to, about 40% of ride-hail trips in major North America cities are on the highway, with speeds above 50 miles per hour.
