There was a hint of a tear in Diego Simeone's eye after his team beat Inter in a shootout to make the Champions League quarter-finals
The noise was deafening inside Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano stadium as Lautaro Martinez made the long walk from the center circle to take Inter Milan’s fifth shootout penalty. Most of the venue’s record attendance of 69,196 were roaring at the top of their lungs as Martinez ran up and smashed the ball high into the crowd behind Jan Oblak’s goal.
Their most famous was also among the most painful moments ever for Atletico fans as Real Madrid beat them on spot kicks in Milan in the 2016 Champions League final, with Oblak not coming close to saving any of their city rivals’ five penalties. They also lost 4-1 to Madrid in a shootout that decided the Spanish Super Cup in 2020.
