NEW: Pres. Trump claims he's 'not involved' in AG William Barr's request to remove SDNY attorney Geoffrey Berman: 'That's all up to the attorney general... that's his department, not my department.'
Geoffrey Berman issued a blunt statement in response to the news and that he had no intention of resigning.Attorney General Wiliam Barr on Saturday penned a letter to Geoffrey Berman, who had been serving as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, informing him that he has formally asked President Donald Trump to remove Berman as U.S. attorney effective immediately.
In his letter Saturday Barr noted that he had offered Berman other positions in the administration, including head of the Civil Division at Main Justice. "Until then, our investigations will move forward without delay or interruption," he continued."I cherish every day that I work with the men and women of this Office to pursue justice without fear or favor – and intend to ensure that this Office's important cases continue unimpeded."
Berman’s legal options could include asking the court that appointed him to declare that he is entitled to stay. In refusing to go quietly, Berman declared the office’s investigations continue unabated.
