Mauricio Dubón having to fill in for Jose Altuve at second base again left the rookie...
The Astros started rookie catcher Yainer Diaz at first base in Sunday’s series finale against the Angels as regular José Abreu got a day off for the second game this season.
Abreu has made 54 of his 57 starts at first base, with his remaining starts at designated hitter. Utilityman David Hensley has logged the second-most starts at first base for Houston this season , but the Astros optioned him back to Class AAA Sugar Land last month as the corresponding move to activate second baseman Jose Altuve.
Diaz had played first base in just one other game prior to Sunday, in the Astros’ May 10 win over the Angels in Anaheim. Along with Mauricio Dubón, Diaz has been regularly working out at first base this season.on Sunday left Diaz as the only viable option to start at first base for Astros manager Dusty Baker.
“I don't know how comfortable he is, actually. We'll see today,” Baker said. “But yeah, you gotta give these guys a day off, plus we only have like one extra infielder, and that puts a little pressure on Breggy and Peña. So you know, I'd like to give them a day off here pretty soon too, especially Bregman. He's been playing every game but it's hard to give him offBaker’s concern over the Astros’ infield depth is not unwarranted.
Despite that, the Astros have continued to carry three catchers on the roster this season. Diaz has appeared in 24 games, while fellow rookie César Salazar has appeared in only 10. Baker, asked this week whether this roster construction will persist, said he did not have an answer.
