Astros star second baseman Jose Altuve fractured his thumb during Venezuela's WBC quarterfinal loss Saturday.in the World Baseball Classic on Saturday and will undergo surgery “in the coming days,” general manager Dana Brown said.
Tests at the Astros’ spring training facility on Sunday morning confirmed the diagnosis, which is expected to sideline Houston’s superstar second baseman indefinitely. Brown did not offer a timetable on Sunday, opting to wait until after Altuve undergoes his operation. “It’s a massive blow,” Brown said. “You can’t replace a player like this this close to the season. These players don’t exist. You just can’t go out and replace this type of a player.”
