New York Mets starting pitcher Justin Verlander walks out of the bullpen before the start of the first inning of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 in Houston.Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez formed perhaps the best 1-2 rotation duo in baseball for last year’s Astros. Verlander won the American League Cy Young Award, and Valdez finished fifth. They started the final two games of the World Series as Houston clinched a championship.

“Framber learned a lot from JV pitching behind him as a number two,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday afternoon. “Now he’s a number one facing another number one. Framber’s done well in those circumstances. And we need a win tonight. We need Framber to step up big.” Valdez took a perfect game into the sixth inning. Mark Canha broke it up with a one-out, opposite-field single. Valdez quickly induced a double play to erase him. He allowed only one hit through seven, darting sinkers, a nasty cutter and curveballs.

It brought the tying run to the plate. Valdez sat at 89 pitches. Bryan Abreu warmed in Houston’s bullpen. Valdez stayed in to face Brandon Nimmo, a lefthanded hitter. Nimmo popped out to end the threat.Ryan Pressly drew the ninth inning for his first save chance in six days. Pete Alonso drew a two-out walk that brought Pham up as the potential tying run. Pressly won a seven-pitch at-bat against Pham, striking him out swinging on a slider.
