A large asteroid the size of a London city bus is set to fly by the Earth in what scientists expect to be the closest pass in 300 years.
The asteroid, identified by authorities as 2023 BU, will come within 2,100 miles of the Earth's surface Thursday, NASA said upon its discovery over the weekend.A majority of asteroids set to pass Earth will do so over 240,000 miles away, which is further than the distance between the Earth and the moon, according to a report.
Newly-discovered #asteroid 2023 BU will pass 3500 km above the tip of South America on January 26. It is 3-8 meters wide. pic.twitter.com/I6DCwjoE8GIf it stays on course, NASA expects this to be the fourth closest approach to the planet, the report noted. Those hoping to view the 12.4 by 27.8 feet asteroid flyby will be able to do so via a livestream hosted by the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy, according to the report.
2023 BU will soar past the planet at 33,000 mph, and experts said there is little to no chance that it will strike the Earth.
