I spoke about all of this with Michelle Yang, an organizer and my classmate at the University of Chicago. We talked about navigating difficult conversations about anti-Blackness with our own parents, who are immigrants. They continued: “But when I talk to my parents, it’s from a place of commitment and care, so I’ll keep on talking to them even if it can be draining and uncomfortable.”
“I don’t think it’s justified,” they said, “but we can understand that it comes from being working-class immigrants trying to make something for themselves in this space.”
