The ash on Thursday was largely concentrated in the Gulf of Alaska east of Kodiak Island, according to the Anchorage Volcanic Ash Advisory Center

on Thursday also appeared to be canceled. Volcanic ash poses a danger to jets because it is abrasive and can cause engines to fail.

Alaska will not see any ashfall because all of the larger particles had already fallen before the cloud reached the state, Orr said.Clouds of ash don’t usually travel as far as this one has, Eckstein said. The volcano is roughly 1,770 miles west of Anchorage. The ash cloud was beginning to thin on Thursday, Eckstein said. Segments that were over the Bering Sea and western Aleutian Islands were no longer a threat, he said. The cloud might further thin on Friday, Eckstein said.

Eckstein said wind direction over the volcano was shifting so that further ash would be pushed over Russia and away from Alaska. But the ash could return to Alaska if the eruption continues, he said. This photo released by the Head of the Ust-Kamchatsky municipal district Oleg Bondarenko on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, shows volcanic ash covers the ground in Kozyrevsk, Ust-Kamchatsky district after the Shiveluch volcano's eruption on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russian far east. Shiveluch, one of Russia's most active volcanoes, erupted Tuesday, spewing clouds of ash 20 kilometers into the sky and covering broad areas with ash.
