Segments that were over the Bering Sea and western Aleutian Islands were no longer a threat, he said. The cloud might further thin on Friday, Eckstein said.
Eckstein said wind direction over the volcano was shifting so that further ash would be pushed over Russia and away from Alaska. But the ash could return to Alaska if the eruption continues, he said.
