Asda has taken back the title of 'most expensive' supermarket after failing to reduce the price of a key staple. Morrisons, Tesco, and Lidl have all lowered the price of butter, but Asda has kept its prices the same. Lidl remains the cheapest supermarket, followed by Sainsbury's and Aldi. Asda has consistently been at the bottom of the comparison since last year.

The change comes as Morrisons, Tesco and Lidl followed the other main supermarkets by reducing a 250g block of butter down from £1.79 to £1.69.Where to go pumpkin picking in and around Greater Manchester for Halloween 2023 It's nothing new for Asda to be in the bottom slot in our comparison, which has monitored the cost of the same eight items since March last year.
Asda says the comparison is unfair and that the small sample of products doesn't give the full picture of prices. It says that as far as supermarket value ranges go, its Just Essentials is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's.
