As retirement nears, Nelson Wolff encourages leaders to protect Spurs

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff talks about his career and passion for sports during an interview at his office, Monday, Aug. 8, 2022. First appointed county judge in 2001 he was elected to the position five times. He’ll retire on December 31 after 50 years of public service.

“I’ve got some great stuff from the Texas Legislature. We’ll save some of that,” Wolff said, referring to mementos collected during his time as a state lawmaker in the 1970s. Wolff also will leave behind a hard-earned, pragmatic, contrarian view of the long-held belief by many of his fellow politicians and business leaders that the city should have a second pro sports franchise.

“But these guys coming to you looking to move, they are the hand maidens of the devil and more treacherous. They are all a lying bunch of sons of bitches, every one one of them. I fell for the Marlins. Phil fell for the New Orleans thing. Henry fell for the Oakland football thing, and I fell for Major League Soccer. And all of them screw you. You are wasting your time talking to them. They just use you.

“The nastiest thing I have ever been through was with Major League Soccer, a bunch of ,” Wolff said. “It was so terrible what they did.” To that end, county commissioners approved a plan in May that allows the small-market Spurs to schedule a few games in Austin and Mexico City as part of their home slate for this season. The plan received Wolff’s blessing after Spurs officials promised that the franchise is committed to San Antonio and is simply trying to expand its regional base in a bid for more corporate sponsors.

“So I spent a lot of time talking with them before I decided to support what they wanted,” he said. “I said, ‘You’ve got to explain to me why you would not go to Austin, with its corporate base, much more wealthier than we are.’” The Spurs’ revenue-sharing agreement with the county, which owns the AT&T Center, also helps the franchise, Wolff said.

The Spurs’ nonrelocation agreement with the county runs through the 2031-32 season and includes severe penalties should they break it. The relocation fee outlined in the pact started at $250 million in the lease's first year and diminishes by $6 million annually. “You can’t know that history and not conclude that stuff changes,” Sanders said. “I’ve seen too many teams that seemed central to a community’s identity that have upped and moved.”
