“It looks like infection rates peaked a couple of weeks back. This is likely due to reduced rates of transmission as fewer people were infected and spreading the virus but also the protective immunity induced by so many people having been infected,” he said.
“This falling trend is likely to continue particularly now that school term has finished – children being an important factor in the spread of the virus.” But there is definitely no room for complacency and those offered the booster jab should take it, Professor Young adds. “If we’ve learnt anything it’s that Covid is unpredictable and we don’t know where and when the next variant will arrive. The autumn/winter period will be challenging with the mix of respiratory infections – new Covid variants, flu and other viruses. The next booster jab is extremely important in protecting the most at risk,” he said.“However, this should not – yet again – lead to complacency.
