After the runaway success of the low budget slasher sequel Terrifier 2 in 2022, the original 2016 Terrifier is set to come to theaters this summer.
Terrifier is getting a theatrical re-release. The film, which is the first non-anthology feature to showcase the slasher villain Art the Clown , only ever received a limited release before going to home media and VOD. However, its microbudget sequel Terrifier 2 made a huge splash at the box office last year thanks to reports of audience members falling ill due to the films gory intensity, resulting in an overall gross of $15 million off its $250,000 budget.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Per The Hollywood Reporter, audiences will have the opportunity to catch the original 2016 Terrifier in theaters this summer. The film will receive its widest release yet, dropping in 700 theaters across the country on July 19. Terrifier distributor Dread is working with Terrifier 2 release partners Iconic Events for this outing as well.
Will the Terrifier Re-Release Make a Splash at the Box Office? It remains to be seen if this Terrifier re-release is able to capture the attention of the same audiences that loved Terrifier 2. While it might seem like a sure thing given Terrifier 2's box office prominence, horror re-releases aren't always hits.
The Terrifier re-release will also be facing some heavy competition on July 19. That date is smack dab in the middle between the release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One and the one-two punch weekend where Barbie and Oppenheimer are both opening. Those blockbuster tentpoles are certain to dominate the charts, though Terrifier might draw in audiences looking for some R-rated counterprogramming.
Just like its sequel, Terrifier has no chance of hitting No. 1 at the box office. However, that clearly isn't its goal. Considering the fact that the film had an even lower budget of just $15,000, this re-release seems destined to be profitable even if it barely makes a blip in comparison to the runaway success of Terrifier 2.
